  • Fred Cesana

    DVM

Dr. Fred Cesana wanted to be a Veterinarian since the age of seven when he lived on a farm in Manchester, CT. After obtaining a BS degree from the University of Connecticut he went on to Michigan State University for his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. The next year was spent at Rowley Memorial Animal Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts where he did an internship and befriended Dr. Lyell Williams. Dr. Cesana then spent 6 months working in private practice in Avon, CT before opening Old Canal Veterinary Clinic in May of 1975. Over the past twenty-five years the practice had grown to four clinics but was later downsized to provide more personalized quality care. As Hospital Director Dr. Cesana takes a personal interest to see that the clinics mission and policies are maintained. When not at the clinic, Dr. Cesana enjoys his two English Setters and three cats. He is also an avid collector of Veterinary memorabilia, Indian relics and decorated stoneware. During his free time he enjoys visiting with his parents and two daughters, Jody and Jamie. Dr. Cesana's professional affiliations include the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Veterinary Hospital Managers Association, World Veterinary Congress, Veterinary Orthopedic Society and the Hartford County Veterinary Medical Association.

  • Troy Hexter

    DVM

Ever since I was old enough to have pets I knew that I wanted to become a veterinarian. After graduating from high school I attended the Ohio State University (OSU) pre-vet program. While going to OSU I volunteered for a local Veterinarian in Columbus to get experience and also to see what Veterinarians job was really all about. My duties started with cleaning the kennels and medicating the patients to assisting in surgery. Before completing my undergraduate studies I applied to OSU Veterinary School and got accepted. After graduating from Veterinary School in 1990 I moved to Connecticut and started working in general practice for 2 years. Following 2 years of general practice I managed an Emergency Clinic in West Hartford for 4 1/2 years. Emergency medicine was very rewarding, however very demanding. Following my stay at the emergency clinic I came to Old Canal Veterinary Clinic where I have been since 1996. I enjoy working in a general practice again and plan to finish my career at Old Canal Veterinary Clinic. Personally I have 3 cats, 8 dogs, 3 horses, 12 goats and 7 chickens. I stay very busy on my farm during my free time. In my spare time I enjoy fishing, working out and playing basketball.

  • Ryan Koopmans

    DVM

I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and just recently moved out to the Northeast. I received my BS from the University of Nebraska--Lincoln and graduated from Veterinary school at Iowa State University. Combining my love of science and animals made becoming a Veterinarian an easy choice. I currently serve in the Army Reserve as a Veterinarian as well. I have two dogs, a Basset hound and Chihuahua. In my spare time I enjoy playing soccer, cycling, home improvement projects, and being outside. I am involved in the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. I'm very excited to be with the VCA team and I look forward to getting to know you and your pet!
